Educational Background
Ph.D., University of Michigan, 2004
Research Interests:
Indonesian history, Southeast Asian history, History of Science, and colonial studies.
Background:
Andrew Goss is a historian of political culture in Indonesia and Southeast Asia. His current research investigates the intersection of science and politics in colonial and post-colonial Indonesia. His publication “Decent Colonialism? Pure Science and Colonial Ideology in the Netherlands East Indies, 1910-1929” is in the February 2009 edition of the Journal of Southeast Asian Studies. The article can be read via the following link: Southeast Asian Studies. He is finishing work on In Leviathan’s Garden: Science and the failure of the Enlightenment in Indonesia.
Andrew Goss enjoys teaching Asian history in New Orleans, a city that usually imagines itself very distant from Asia. Increasingly he has found commonalities between New Orleans and the entrepôts of Southeast Asia. And he may be the only Indonesianist living outside of Southeast Asia to live on the site of a former sugar plantation. He has taken up golf, and as he drags himself around the local golf course during the summer season, he longingly thinks back to living in Jakarta.
