UNO student Chanda M. Nunez’s M.A. thesis re-interprets the racist depictions of “pecan candy” or “plarine” vendors as “mammies.” She connects their legacy to the 21st century praline businesswomen no longer encumbered by the “mammy” legacy. Her kids’ history activity booklet focuses upon these 18th & 19th Century street vendors as entrepreneurs — before the tourist economy & praline shops branded them as mammies.
