Concentration in Public History (MA)

A variation of the standard curriculum, this concentration in public history is available

UNO history grad student Traci Bruno interviews Cheryl Andrus Falgoust during the 2008 Po-Boy Festival. Ms. Falgoust, the daughter of Oak Street businessman and jazz trumpeter Dutch Andrus, told stories about growing up on Oak Street during the 1950s. Ms. Falgoust responds to a photograph of her father's appliance repair shop, which was located in the 8100 block of Oak Street.

to students interested in the practice and presentation of history for a public audience. This concentration does not preclude pursuit of a doctorate in history, but it is designed to provide history students with the opportunity to use New Orleans as a laboratory in which to develop skills for work in museums, historic sites, archives and other public venues. The curriculum for this concentration combines history coursework with courses in the theory and practice of public history and a three-hour internship at a local museum, archive or library. Students in this concentration must complete a minimum of 30 credit hours in one of two tracks, culminating with a thesis and a comprehensive oral examination.
