Admissions

Entrance Requirements

Admission to the graduate program in History typically requires a minimum GPA of 3.0 for undergraduate work. An undergraduate major in history is not required.

Applications & Transcripts

Applicants must submit both a UNO Online Application and a History Program Application and submit all college transcripts and GRE scores to the Admissions office. For more details, click “To Apply”.

In order to be eligible for funding, applicants must take the Graduate Record Examination General Test eight to twelve weeks before applying to the history program, and have their scores sent to the Admissions office. While the department carefully considers each part of the application—undergraduate GPA, letters of recommendation, personal statement—a strong GRE score can improve an applicant's chances for funding. There is no official minimum GRE score. However, the history admissions committee prefers Verbal and Quantitative scores above 500, and places special emphasis on the applicant's Verbal score.

Applicants who are not seeking funding can be admitted to the program on the condition that they take the GRE before the end of their first semester. A student who fails to do so will not be able to register for the following semester. Students who have completed a graduate degree in another field may request a waiver of the requirement to take the GRE. GRE scores are valid for five years.
